About MiserSaver

My Story

Matthew Brown, MiserSaver’s founder, has over 25 years of experience in banking, finance and investing. He was a casualty of the dotcom bust in 2000 and the financial crisis in 2008. Having lost two finance jobs in less than ten years, the second shortly after marriage and the birth of his son, Matthew learned to be very resourceful in the management of his personal finances.

Matthew believes in living well, but also in being a prudent spender and saver. Given the demands of a full-time job and family of four, time is critically valuable. Matthew believes many can relate, and while saving money is important, limited time is best spent on big-ticket items that can have the biggest impact.

How one spends or invests in a home, car, healthcare, education, retirement, vacation, rental properties, luxury goods, etc. can have a tremendous impact on overall finances. These, and other areas where savings can easily top thousands or tens of thousands of dollars, are areas that Matthew will focus on for advice and discussion. New topics from readers are welcomed and encouraged.

Getting a real estate license during a lull at work was initially just something to do to keep busy. The experience led him to become a real estate investor on the side. He currently owns six income generating properties and is always on the lookout for more.

As part of his pursuit of real estate investments, Matthew has also created tools to better evaluate the returns of investment properties (see www.calculatemyrealestate.com). He developed a refinance tool that enables homeowners to compare refinance options with their existing mortgages in a far more thorough and accurate (NPV) way than what is offered by other calculators available out there (payback period).

Matthew received his BS in economics from The Wharton School, and MBA from Columbia Business school. He currently works in healthcare and maintains his personal finance and real estate investing blogs as a hobby.
